SUMMARY:Geordie Gaol Girls - The Play
DESCRIPTION:Following Women’s Workshop’s involvement in the workshops that helped create its characters (ours is ‘Hilda Collins’)\, Geordie Gaol Girls the play will unearth the hidden herstories of the women and girls who lived and worked within the walls of Newcastle’s gaol. From fearless suffragettes who risked everything for equality to the last woman ever hanged in the city\, Geordie Gaol Girls brings to life the voices that history tried to silence. Were they criminals—or simply women of their time\, punished for stepping out of line? And do their spirits still linger in the shadows of the old site? This isn’t just a play; it’s a once-in-a-lifetime theatrical experience. For the first\, and perhaps only time\, these untold stories will be performed on the very ground where they unfolded\, exactly 100 years after the prison closed its doors. More info here \nWe have a small number of complimentary tickets available for the performance at 1pm on 22nd Oct. Please let us know asap if you would be interested in coming along.

SUMMARY:'Geordie Gaol Girl' Launch
DESCRIPTION:A special event for IWD\, launching our involvement in a new drama based project\, Geordie Gaol Girls with Workie Ticket Theatre Company\, and looking at what’s changed for women in the justice system. \n“Workie Ticket Theatre invites you to take part in the Geordie Gaol Girls project—an exciting opportunity to explore the forgotten stories of the women imprisoned in Newcastle Gaol and the staff who worked there. \nJoin us for an Information Day on 10th March at 1pm to learn more about the project\, upcoming workshops\, and how you can get involved. We’ll also discuss how women’s experiences in the justice system have changed—or remained the same—over time. \nFollowing this session\, participants can join weekly creative workshops every Tuesday from 18th March\, using drama\, storytelling and writing to bring these histories to life. As part of this process\, you’ll help develop a character who will become one of the main figures in the final immersive play. You will even get the chance to meet your character as they come to life\, performed by a professional actor! \nNo prior experience is needed—just an interest in women’s history or trying something new. We’d love for you to be involved! Email workietickettheatre@gmail.com for more info and info@womensworkshop.net to let us know if you’d like to be involved.

SUMMARY:Walk the Line Conference
DESCRIPTION:Workie Ticket would like to invite you to our WALK THE LINE creative conference\, delivered as part of the United Nations 16 Days of Activism to end gender based violence. \nThis year\, our primary focus is specifically on post- separation abuse. \nDiscover why the ‘system is broken’ and how the likes of Family Court\, CAFCASS\, the Child Maintenance Service can often make it harder for survivors to break-free from the cycle of abuse. Whilst the onus is often placed on leaving the abusive relationship\, what happens after you do so? What are the next steps for those leaving an abusive relationship and why and how should services be aware that the abuse often does not stop after physical separation? \nWe aim to host a unique conference with live performances\, an art exhibition\, keynote speakers\, an expert panel discussion and a chance to take part in creating a ‘Walk the Line’ action plan; all produced\, presented and delivered by survivors of abuse. \nThe conference will include: \nSpecial guest keynote speaker: Kayliegh Richardson\, Associate Professor in Law at Northumbria University and a Family Law solicitor. \nCEO of White Ribbon UK\, Anthea Sully: White Ribbon is the UK’s leading charity engaging men and boys in the fight to end violence against women and girls. \nA performance of ‘I Walk the Line’\, a play written by JoJo Kirtley about single mother Steph\, who sings to block out her abusive ex and remains determined to ‘walk the line’ for her two sons. Based on real-life events\, ‘I Walk the Line’ will be performed by survivor Ashlea Sanderson and directed by Charlotte Ryder. \nA work-in-progress theatre piece about post-separation abuse written in collaboration with playwright and survivor\, JoJo Kirtley. \nAn art exhibition by local artist and survivor\, Ellen Erichsen. \nAnd much\, much more to be announced..! \nPresented by the inspirational Fisa Humpledink. \n*Please note that this conference will discuss strong themes that some people might find triggering such as sexual violence\, physical violence\, covert abuse/coercive control and emotional abuse.* \nAll welcome; although we strongly recommend 14+ \nFunded by Groundworks Comic Relief. This conference is free because we believe in making these discussions accessible to all. However\, donations are welcome.

SUMMARY:Tickbox - performance with Lubna Kerr
DESCRIPTION:A semi-autobiographical\, one-woman play in Scots-English and Urdu\, which combines theatre\, storytelling\, and comedy to interweave the journeys of two Scottish Pakistani women. \nTickbox describes a Pakistani woman’s journey from a very comfortable\, middle-class life in Pakistan to Govan in Glasgow. It recounts the challenges and contrasts she encountered when she first moved to her new home in Scotland\, and intertwines with her daughter’s story\, and the barriers she too has faced. \nDrawing out the parallels in their lives\, decades apart\, we meet two women whose experiences could see them typecast in the stereotypical role of downtrodden Asian women\, but who are united by blood\, passion\, and determination. \nWe have ten free tickets – let Lesley know if you’d like to come admin@womensworkshop.net

SUMMARY:Sylvia
DESCRIPTION:Still tickets left for performance at the Cheviot Centre on Friday March 9th – don’t miss out\, add your name to the list of those coming along. \nSell-out play celebrates women getting the vote \n100 years after women got the vote\, the acclaimed play ‘Sylvia’\, about suffragette and artist Sylvia Pankhurst\, is coming to the Borders as part of International Women’s Day celebrations. \nJackie Mulhallen\, the author and sole performer said “Sylvia was a leading figure in the fight for the vote and for better pay and working conditions for working women\, but she is often forgotten. An accomplished artist\, she also painted the first ever series of pictures of working women\, including the bondagers\, and these pictures are part of the show.” \nSylvia Pankhurst has been hailed as the “greatest Englishwoman of the 20th century”\, and this play about her has already sold out in Wolverhampton and Salford. It is being staged at   The Cheviot Centre in Wooler on Friday 9th March (tickets £8). Ring 01668 282406 \nDirector and designer William Alderson said there had been a constant \ndemand for its revival\, and last year Lynx launched its first national tour of this updated production\, but with the same actress returning to the role. The author said: “We have found that ‘Sylvia’ is as relevant today as when it was when it was first written – possibly even more so\, and performances are frequently selling out. In Salford the tickets went in just four days and over a month before we were to perform!” \nMr Alderson’s production uniquely uses a sequence of slides of Sylvia \nPankhurst’s life and art as a background to the play’s action\, among them her paintings of the bondagers of the Border country. “I use 250 slides of images from collections of archive photos of people and places in her life\, and specially commissioned photos of Manchester and Venice\, where she studied mosaics at San Marco. It is also a rare opportunity to see almost all her paintings\, now held in private collections\, including that of her granddaughter\, Helen Pankhurst\,” said the director. Local writer\, Dinah Iredale\, who has written about the bondagers\, will be joining the company for the audience discussion after both performances. She saw the play in Blyth last year and said “I thoroughly enjoyed the performance and the combination of the images and acting was perfect.” \nMs Mulhallen\, who studied theatre in Finland for a year and visited Poland twice to look at its its progressive theatre scene\, also draws on experience as a student and performer in fringe and community theatre in London and Sydney. ‘Rebels and Friends’\, another play by her\, was toured round England and Ireland by Lynx\, and that too may be revived this year. Mr Alderson\, who also directed that play\, studied drama at Bristol University\, and worked for 25 years in BBC Television News as a film\, video and computer editor. \nThe performances have been supported by the Scottish Borders Rape Crisis Centre\, the Scottish Borders Council\, Unison and the RMT.
