Self-Sabotage: Ditching Behaviours that Hold Us Back
People-pleasing, perfectionism and procrastination are three forms of self sabotage we will explore these and more positive alternatives
Stopping Self-Sabotage: Ditching the behaviours that hold us back.
Do you try hard to please other people, often at your own expense? Do you set yourself unrealistic goals and criticise yourself when you don’t achieve them? Do you have an overwhelming feeling that you don’t deserve your success, that you are about to be ‘found out’ and exposed as a fraud? Do you often delay important tasks in favour of others that are neither important nor urgent? Is the gremlin on your shoulder constantly telling you that you are useless and worthless?
If you answered ‘Yes!’ to any or all these questions, you’re not alone, and you’re definitely not useless or worthless but you might have adopted some coping strategies that aren’t as helpful as they initially seemed.
People-pleasing, perfectionism and procrastination are just three such ‘strategies’ that crop up time and time again in discussions about self-sabotaging beliefs and behaviours. We can fall foul of any or all of them, either independently, or combined in a toxic cocktail.
In this session we’ll explore these behaviours, considering what they are, which ones we might ‘prefer’, and why and how we get caught up in them. We’ll look at their limitations, but we’ll do so kindly – there are reasons why we use them, and they may even be helpful in the short term, but sooner or later they stack up their own problems. We’ll identify some more useful alternatives so that we can get out of our own way!
