Our HERitage Connection

13th April 2020

Today – we’d like to stay connected with you all by sharing a lovely memory of our International Women’s Day celebration. This year, we were funded by the Great Northumberland Winter Festival to deliver art, drama & creative writing workshops as part of our HERitage project which started in January.

We worked with Workie Ticket Theatre company at the Dovecote centre, in Amble to create a drama piece that was performed by some of the women who attend Women’s Workshop. After 12 weeks of drama workshops, a visit to the archives, lots of research and one dress rehearsal, we were ready to perform to an audience, our play “Sticky Toffee Pudding and Butterscotch Sauce” which was about -what Northumberland women want and the importance of passing down our heritage to celebrate herstory.  We also explored different Northumberland women such as Josephine Butler & Emily Wilding Davison and the impact they have had on us. As well as looking at forgotten heroines like Margaret Armstrong who was the Cresswell, Grace Darling of her time.  JoJo also wrote a monologue entitled “HERitage” which was performed beautifully by Lynne Stutt. Some of the women had never been on a stage before and they were all amazing! The Unchoir Choir performed for us all- they sang with such passion & love.  The space was also full of our art and creative writing work. We also invited art group- Northern Butterflies to display their art. It was such a great day, topped off with a gorgeous cake and lots of laughter.

We had some terrific feedback from our audience including how outstanding the performances were and what a well-organised event it was.

We’d like to share this memory with you all with some photographs taken by Jason Thompson who did an amazing job of capturing the performance! https://soundideasmedia.shootproof.com/gallery/11833077/home

Well done to everyone who took part. It was an amazing way to stay connected with each other. At the moment, we can’t deliver workshops but we can remember together a fantastic time and hope for many more in the future!

Thanks to Northumberland Theatre Company, Jenny Blayney & Romi Jones.

Some of JoJo’s photos for you all to look at too! IMG20200226110306
